LEADER TECHNOLOGIES > CASE STUDIES > SOFTWARE UNLOCK VIA PRODUCT REGISTRATION

Software Unlocking Via Product Registration

Adobe Systems, Inc., whose revenue in its last fiscal year exceeded $1.2 billion, was looking for a way to distribute a free version of their leading digital photography software and identify the customers using the product. Adobe wanted to make the product available to as wide of an audience as possible while retaining the ability to identify registered users of the product and market directly to them in the future. Adobe predicted that after customers had the opportunity to enjoy the capabilities of the trial version of the software that people would see the value of upgrading to the full version of the product at a nominal price.

Goals

The overall goals of the project were as follows:

  1. Provide a product that could be easily and quickly downloaded from the Adobe and other Web sites.
  2. Bundle the product with multiple strategic partners.
  3. Limit the number of free uses of the software before registration became mandatory, blocking use of the software until registration was successfully completed.
  4. Provide an unlocking code via email to build a database of valid opt-in email addresses.
  5. Follow-up marketing to the opt-in user database via a series of email campaigns to encourage product upgrades.

Implementation

Adobe looked to Leader Technologies to provide a system that would meet the goals of the project. Through close interaction with Adobe, Leader was able to deliver a registration application that allowed a predetermined number of uses (25 in this case) before registration became mandatory for subsequent product use. Special engineering was required regarding the size of the registration application so that it had as little impact as possible when downloading the Adobe application from multiple Web sites.

Leader developed a system that requested the user to register each time the product was started. The system listed the number of uses still available before the customer had to register if they wished to continue to use the free version of the software.

The system Leader delivered was composed of five main components. The first was the registration application itself. The second was the delivery of an unlocking code via a registration confirmation email. The third was passing the unlocking code from the registration application back to the Adobe program. The fourth was tracking and reporting on the various data elements collected. The fifth was marketing to the opt-in user base to promote product upgrades.

Process

Step 1: Requested Registration

The registration application runs each time the customer begins the program and notifies the user how many times are left before registration becomes mandatory.

Step 2: Required Registration

Upon the 25th use, Leader's registration application prevents the user from using the Adobe software until the product is successfully registered.

Step 3: Delivery of the Unlocking Code

After the user registers, they receive an unlocking code via email which verifies and validates the user's email address.

Above: The Thank You for Registering screen informs the user that they will be receiving their unlock code via email and how to enter the code in the Adobe application.

Step 4: Unlocking the Software

Once the user enters the unique unlocking code, received via email, the program can be used indefinitely.

Step 5: Follow Up Marketing

After the customer registers and chooses to opt-in, Adobe actively communicates via email with the user to encourage them to upgrade to the full version of the program or to expose them to other compatible Adobe products. The delivery of the unlocking email has served the purpose of validating a user's email address and allows the user to opt-in or out of further communication from Adobe.

Step 6: Results

All aspects of the program are tracked and reported on. Reports are updated nightly and can be viewed online via the secure Web based Customer Information Access Center. Each report provides current statistics on the program, including easy-to-read graphs and simple navigation between the individual reports.
