20% Discount Coupon Dramatically Increases Response
Rates and Generates Sales!
A leading Consumer Electronics Manufacturer dramatically increased
its product registration response rates and sold significantly more
products online by including a 20% discount coupon, redeemable at
its online store, as part of its online product registration system.
For many of the products this manufacturer shipped, there
was no need to connect to a computer to use the product. This posed
a problem to registering customers as this manufacturer had eliminated
the standard in-the-box registration card. Card registration had become
too expensive to enter into a database and the time lag between receiving
the card and having the information available was too long.
The question arose as to how to encourage the user to go online to
register. This was successfully accomplished by giving the end user
a clear benefit to registering their product by issuing a 20% discount
coupon on specifically related products to the one just registered.
The program entailed placing a flyer in the product box about the
discount program, adding information to the user manual, adding stickers
to the product box and posting information to multiple locations on
its web site.
Upon
registering online, as part of the initial web pages the end-user
sees, the manufacturer presents the 20% discount offer and has the
user complete a small survey form. Once the registration has been
successfully submitted, a unique 20% discount coupon is presented
to the user. This has generated a significantly higher registration
response and completion rate of the product registration form and
has been the key factor in generating more than $50,000.00 per day
in online sales. That's over 18 million dollars in sales per year.
Providing users an incentive to register their product is a key component
to generating higher response rates. Items such as "Technical Support"
and "Warranty Information" have traditionally been used as key incentives.
However, with the advent of online stores, providing a redeemable
coupon is a major incentive that should be employed by all manufacturers.

coupon in the following manner. Each month the consumer manufacturer
provides Leader with a list of unique coupons to be issued at the
time of product registration. Should this number of coupons fall to
a pre-determined quantity, Leader automatically generates a request form to send to the manufacturer to obtain a new set of coupons.
On the product
registration "Thank You for Registering" screen, a coupon is pulled
from the list provided and displayed to the end user along with instructions
on how to redeem the coupon. In addition, a "Registration
Confirmation Email" is sent to the end-user with the same coupon
number and instructions on how to use the coupon.
The manufacturer processes each coupon on their online store and electronically
marks those coupons that have been used. Once used, they are no longer
redeemable at the online store. Both a percentage discount or a "fixed"
dollar coupon have been effective in generating increased response
rates and additional product sales.
