1. What support is there for PowerMerge with OS X?

We are still evaluating PowerMerge on OS X and will know more soon. PowerMerge did not used to work with OSX, however, Apple made some changes to OS X to improve compatability, as we now use PowerMerge successfully between OS X systems.

Be careful as the protection and sharing scheme is much more complicated now and there may be many files that will fail moving because you can not overwrite them. This is meant to protect you, but was never an issue under the Classic Mac environment. Moving your own documents between your documents folder appears to be very reliable. There are other subtleties as the clocks between the classic environment and the OSX environment drift apart. Using the preferences control panel to restart the classic environment corrects this drift. However, there sometimes appears to be discrepancies of exactly a minute or two between file systems and it is not clear where this comes from. Also make sure you are showing the two computers to be in the same time zone, but as always do not adjust clocks or time zones while the computers are mounted on one or the other. Sorry, we do not have a target date for converting PowerMerge to OSX, but we do appreciate support.

We want PowerMerge to work for our customers and for our own purposes, as we use it continously ourselves, so we will be trying to resolve the OS X issues.

2. Why does PowerMerge show all files need to be moved?

The first thing to do when this occurs is nothing! i.e. do not update your files. Instead read the information below.

This usually occurs when PowerMerge is being used across a network after the clock on one computer or the other has been adjusted while the computers were connected. One way to tell if this is the case is to highlight files in the right portion of the window and look at the detailed information at the bottom of the window to see if the file times are all off by the same amount of time. For instance if for each file you highlight, the time on the left is off by 1 hour compared to the time on the right, then this is most likely what has happened.

To correct this situation, first quit PowerMerge without updating your files. Then check to make sure the clock on each computer is adjusted correctly. They do not have to be EXACTLY the same, but within a minute or so is fine. Be sure to check the A.M. and P.M. settings to make sure they are correct. Then restart one or both computers.

Run PowerMerge again and it should now show that only the files that truly need updating need to be moved.

3. Is PowerMerge compatible with OS 8 and OS 9?

PowerMerge works with System 9.x without any reported problems.

System 8.5 users have sometimes experienced problems with PowerMerge. However, it always seems that Norton Utilities and more specifically Norton Antivirus is involved. If you were previously using PowerMerge without any problems and started experiencing problems with System 8.5, please try running it without extensions and see if the problem goes away. If you do use the Norton utilities, try disabling just these to see if the problem goes away. We are currently checking into what is occuring. PowerMerge does not use any inits or extensions, so there is nothing to disable with respect to these on PowerMerge.

PowerMerge is compatible with Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 8.1 . It is also compatible with System 7, and even down to System 6.3. However, there are certain features, such as Drag and Drop that are not available in System 6.x.

5. How do I use PowerMerge when the disk I need to backup is larger than my backup disk(s)?

PowerMerge backs up or synchronizes in a Finder format so that your documents are always in a format that you can readily use. Consequently, the disk that you are synchronizing or backing up to, needs to be large enough to hold all files being moved to it. You may need to group your folders into sets so that each set fits on a different removable disk.

For example, let's say that your hard drive is about 3 times the size of a single backup disk. You may then need 3 backup disks, and 3 PowerMerge setup documents. You might consider backing up your System folder and related items to 1 disk, your applications to another disk, and your work documents to another disk. Assume you keep all of your working documents in a folder titled "My Work" on your hard disk.

Following this scheme, you would create an empty folder on a backup disk, perhaps titled "Backup Work", and then select "My Work" from your hard drive to backup to "Backup Work" on the removable disk. Once these files are all moved, you could save this setup document as "Do Work Backup" and use it whenever this backup needs to be performed.

Similarly, you would have two other setup documents, one that might do everything except your work and application folders to one disk, and a second that does just your applications to another disk.

The beauty of this scheme is that in general, you are mostly changing items in your work folder, and this is the only setup document you normally need to use. This backup will be very quick, compared to scanning the entire disk.

7. If I get a type 1 or type 11 error when using PowerMerge, what is wrong?

Sorry, but we know you've heard this before...

Try running PowerMerge with the minimum set of extensions required. If you have Extension Manager, try with just the minimal set suggested for your version of the Mac OS. If the problem goes away, you should try and narrow it down to the extension causing the problem.

PowerMerge does not use any extensions or INITs, so it is generally unaffected by most extensions.

If you are using PowerMerge across a network and a problem occurs, try moving the same files to another local hard disk or another dummy folder on the same disk. If the problem goes away, you are most likely experiencing a networking problem. This seems to most often occur with foreign file systems that do not exactly duplicate the functionallity of the AppleShare environment.

8. In 2005, PowerMerge started saying my clock is wrong. How do I fix this?

When the latest version of PowerMerge was completed in 1995, it wasn't uncommon for clocks to be wrong on restarts.

In order to warn users of this before synchronizing and ruining file dates across a network, PowerMerge checked to make sure the system date wasn't before 1994 or after 2004 (arbitrarily). It wasn't anticipated that this version would still be in use in 2005! We're glad it is.

A patcher to update the program to correct this problem can be downloaded here.
